The 2016 vintage of Château Talbot is a classic Saint-Julien – poised, elegant, and deeply satisfying. Aromas of cassis, blackberry and cedar leap out of the glass, with hints of cigar box and violets. On the palate, it’s all about balance: ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a long, cool finish with just the right amount of oak spice and minerality.

Top food pairings:

• Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic
• Vegan aubergine and lentil moussaka
• Cheese: Try with a wedge of aged Manchego or Tomme de Savoie

Serving suggestion: Decant for an hour and serve just below room temperature to let those classic claret notes shine.

Château Talbot is one of the most recognisable names in Saint-Julien, a fourth growth in the 1855 Classification but often punching well above its rank. With over a century in the hands of the Cordier family, it’s a benchmark estate for traditional claret done right.

The 2016 vintage was near-perfect in Bordeaux – a warm, dry summer followed by cool nights and just enough rain at the right time. Talbot’s deep gravel soils and proximity to the Gironde estuary gave the vines ideal ripening conditions.

Winemaking details:

• Grape blend: Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a touch of Cabernet Franc
• Fermentation: In temperature-controlled stainless steel vats
• Aging: 16–18 months in oak barrels (around 50% new)
• Viticulture: Sustainable practices in the vineyard with selective hand harvesting
